Washington Black by Esi Edugyan (Canada)
Everything Under by Daisy Johnson (U.K.)
The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner (U.S.)
The Overstory by Richard Powers (U.S.)
The Long Take by Robin Robertson (U.K.)
The shortlist includes the debut novel Everything Under by Daisy Johnson, who is a former bookseller at Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford. (She left when she received a two-book publishing deal with Jonathan Cape.)
The winner will be announced on October 16.
